Document legalization is the process of authenticating a document so it is officially recognized for use in another country. If you are using Nepali documents abroad — or foreign documents in Nepal — understanding legalization helps you avoid delays.
What is document legalization?
Legalization confirms that the seals and signatures on a document are genuine, so authorities in another country will accept it. It is commonly required for education, employment, migration, marriage and business documents used internationally.
How legalization works in Nepal
Nepal is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents are authenticated through a step-by-step consular legalization chain rather than a single apostille. The general steps are:
- Translation & notarization — the document is translated (if needed) and notarized by a registered notary public. This is the part we handle for you.
- Government attestation — the relevant ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) attest the document. This is a government step you complete directly.
- Embassy legalization — the destination country's embassy in Nepal legalizes the document. Handled by you with the embassy.
What is an apostille — and does Nepal use it?
An apostille is a simplified one-step legalization used between Hague Convention countries. Because Nepal is not a member, an apostille is not issued here; documents follow the consular legalization route above instead.
