About this calculator
Nepali transcripts land in four different grading languages, and they do not quite agree. This tool carries the exact cut-offs each board publishes, so a 72 percent NEB result does not get flattened to a rough 2.88 GPA — it correctly lands in the B+ band at 3.2.
Semester GPA — the formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade point × Credit hours) ÷ Σ Credit hours
Three subjects — a 3-credit A (4.0), a 2-credit B+ (3.3) and a 3-credit B (3.0) — produce (4.0×3 + 3.3×2 + 3.0×3) ÷ 8 = 27.6 ÷ 8, or an SGPA of 3.45.
GPA targets Nepali students commonly aim for
- US undergraduate programmes: around 3.0 GPA equivalent keeps most applications competitive
- UK and Australian Master's: 2.8 for a standard offer, 3.3 for the higher-ranked institutions
- Nepali MBBS and BE scholarship slots: 3.0 in PCB or PCM at Grade 12
- Canadian study permit offers: 2.4 plus a valid English-proficiency score
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA worked out in Nepal?
Each subject percentage maps to a banded letter grade that carries a fixed grade point on the 4.0 scale. Semester GPA weights those points by credit hours, summed across subjects and divided by the total credits.
Why does the same percentage give different GPAs?
Because the boards cut at different places. NEB uses 0.4-point steps with D all the way down to 30 percent; TU and KU both treat anything under 40 percent as F. Pick the right board and the tool applies that board's bands.
Can I convert a GPA back into a percentage?
Not exactly — a grade point describes a band, not a single number. The GPA → % mode returns the midpoint of the matched band, which is what most foreign admission offices want on application forms.
Does CTEVT really use the NEB scale?
For school-level technical streams, yes — CTEVT issues NEB-equivalent mark sheets. Diploma and Pre-Diploma programmes often move to a TU-style semester grading instead. The CTEVT option here follows the NEB pattern; verify against your institute's legend.
Is 3.5 considered a strong GPA?
On the 4.0 scale a 3.5 sits inside the A band — roughly 76 to 79 percent in NEB. That clears the bar for most Nepali scholarship competitions and the common 3.0 cut-off foreign universities ask of international applicants.
